The wait is almost over, and the phones are almost ready to start ringing with actual picks and trades. The 2014 NFL Draft is just two days away, leaving fans, team executives, and certainly soon-to-be rookie players on edge.
Here are five players with local ties who will be staying near the phone over the next few days. For one, the phone call is likely to come Thursday night. Others might be sweating out all weekend to see if they are among the 256 players drafted. And for some, the phone call could even come on Sunday, with word that a team would like to sign him as an undrafted rookie free agent.
For all of them, the road to the NFL truly begins this week.
CB Kyle Fuller (Mount St. Joe, Virginia Tech)
Projection: 1st round
Fuller won’t be waiting long to hear his name called. Fuller, a Woodlawn native, has been one of the 30 players invited to be in the green room during the first round of the draft. NFL Network draft guru Mike Mayock called Fuller “my No. 1 corner” in the draft. In his latest mock draft, ESPN’s Todd McShay has Fuller going at No. 15 to the Steelers.
RB Terrance West (Northwestern HS, Towson)
Projection: 3rd or 4th round
West is a homegrown player who would love to play for his hometown team after a record-shattering season and a run to the national championship game at the former Division I-AA level. Will his skills translate to the NFL? Most people think so. The 5-foot-9, 225-pound West could be a Day 2 pick. If not, he shouldn’t have a long wait before hearing his name called on the third day.
WR Michael Campanaro (River Hill HS, Wake Forest)
Projection: 6th round
At 5-foot-9 and 192 pounds, Campanaro is often compared to slot receivers Wes Welker and Danny Amendola. The Clarksville native helped his stock with an outstanding Combine in February, showing good speed and athleticism. Campanaro’s 229 career catches at Wake Forest set a school record. Campanaro finds himself lodged in a ridiculously deep crop of wide receivers in this draft.
