Camp Notes Young Linebackers Impress as the Pads Go On

The Ravens defense had some ups and downs on Saturday afternoon as the Ravens were in full pads for the first time this training camp.

Cornerback Chykie Brown had a disappointing day in the Ravens defensive backfield, getting beat by wide receivers Jacoby Jones and Steve Smith Sr. Brown allowed receivers to get past him on multiple occasions on passes from both Joe Flacco and Tyrod Taylor. Time will tell if the ultimate third cornerback for the season is currently on the roster or not.

Notes & Observations

Rookie linebacker C.J. Mosley had an impressive strip for a fumble on tight end Owen Daniels during 7-on-7 drills. Mosley continues to show why the Ravens had him rated so high on their draft board.

Not to be outdone by Mosley, second-year linebacker Arthur Brown got involved with a strip fumble of his own on wide receiver Jacoby Jones.

Second-year linebacker John Simon has had a quiet training camp thus far. The former Ohio State Buckeye saw action in seven games in 2013 on special teams, producing four tackles. Simon seems buried on the Ravens depth chart at the moment and will need a successful camp to make the roster.

Newly inked safety Will Hill took little time to get noticed in just his second day of practice. The veteran picked off a pass from rookie quarterback Keith Wenning.

Rookie Timmy Jernigan turned in another solid performance on Saturday. Jernigan and Brandon Williams performed well during pass rushing and 11-on-11 drills.  The battle along the Ravens defensive front is going to be fun to watch as training camp presses on.

Linebacker Terrell Suggs continued his streak of solid practices causing headaches for the Ravens offensive line. Suggs found himself in the face of quarterback Joe Flacco on two separate occasions for sacks.  After one of the encounters Suggs could be heard joking, “he got paid a lot of money. I’m not trying to get my coach fired!” presumably about making sure he didn’t touch the franchise quarterback.

*Lardarius Webb (back), Dominique Franks (conditioning) and Terrence Cody (hip) were not present for practice.
