Smith & Smith Cross Examine Defense

Share
Reading Time: 2 minutes

The offense took the field intent on sharpening their skills in offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak’s new system.

It is easy to see that the Kubiak offense certainly is tight end friendly. Dennis Pitta, Owen Daniels and Crockett Gillmore were used early and often during practice on Monday night. All three exhibited their pass catching skills along with their blocking ability during pass rush drills. Gillmore seemingly picked up where he left off on Sunday looking the part of a true run blocker.

The Ravens running backs enjoyed a nice evening of practice. Ray Rice, Bernard Pierce along with Justin Forsett all had long carries while running downhill. Rookie running back Lorenzo Taliaferro continues to show he can succeed in short yardage situations. The 6-o, 226 pound back out of Coastal Carolina  picked up first downs in both 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills including a touchdown with the second team offense.

Wide Receiver Notes

Steve Smith Sr. brought with him his fiery personality in his first trip in a Ravens uniform to M&T Bank Stadium. Smith Sr. caught several nice passes from Joe Flacco and after scoring a touchdown he once again spun the ball at the defender’s feet.

Wide receiver Torrey Smith turned in the Play of the Day with a one handed acrobatic catch for a first down. Torrey’s route running skills are getting better each and every day. Heading into a contract year, many are expecting a big season out of the former Maryland Terp.

Marlon Brown, Kamar Aiken and rookies Michael Campanaro and Jeremy Butler all had several nice receptions during practice. Brown made a diving catch from Flacco while Aiken almost broke the ankles of Tramain Jacobs while making him bite after a reception. Campanaro is showing why the Ravens made a move for him during the draft in May using his speed and sure hands against defenders.

Other Notes & Observations

Two days removed from what appeared to be some communication issues that resulted in a few bad snaps, the chemistry between Joe Flacco and new center Jeremy Zuttah is getting better day by day. Flacco has the offense operating at an increasingly faster tempo than ever before.

Justin Tucker was solid on field goals despite the wind that was whipping through the field making 9 out of 10 including back to back 58 yarders. Tucker also connected on two, 33 yard extra points.

Parker Graham and Will Rackley missed practice for the second straight day.

Several players received ovations when they appeared on the Big video boards at the stadium including Ray Rice, Jacoby Jones and Steve Smith Sr.

The Ravens will take Tuesday off before returning to practice on Wednesday at the Under Armour Performance Center in Owings Mills.
