The Boston media has put out some of the most unprofessional sports writing I have ever read this week. By now, you’ve probably heard about the one Boston area writer, Eric Wilbur, who called the Ravens “the most deplorable organization in professional American sports.” This coming from a writer covering a team who had one of its stars indicted on multiple murder charges.
As a Ravens fan, I have an innate hatred for the Steelers. I try to hate them more than any other team in the league, and I usually do, especially when it comes to Mike Tomlin and Ben Roethlisberger. But with every time we play that team, I learn to respect them more. I know that both teams are better off having to play each other 2-3 times per year.
With the Patriots, my hatred is directed in a different way.
The more I watch Tom Brady, the more I respect him. I like the raw emotion that he brings and his visible energy on the sideline and on the field. The thing that lingers that keeps my hatred toward him somewhat alive is his crying for roughing the quarterback calls, especially when it costs the Ravens a win.
But that’s not what makes my blood boil the most about the Patriots.
That’s not why I sometimes find myself contemplating whether I hate them or the Steelers more.
What makes my hatred for the Patriots begin to mushroom is my disdain for the sports fans of Boston. They are the most arrogant bunch of sports fans I’ve ever had the displeasure of being around.
And it’s not just Patriots fans, it’s sports fans of the entire area.
I’m sure many of you have experienced the unbearable amount of Red Sox fans who have flooded Oriole Park at Camden Yards in the down years of the franchise. You’ve experienced their arrogance and obnoxiousness that’s become a part of Red Sox fandom since they won the World Series in 2004. That series coupled with the Patriots’ dominance at the time made them the cockiest fans in the world.
And it hasn’t gone away, even though the Patriots haven’t won a Super Bowl in 10 years.
That arrogance apparently extends to the journalists and bloggers of the area.
I am baffled by some of the things I’ve read coming out of Boston. The Ravens have played 13 other teams this year, and not ONE of them has had even close to the ridiculous media display that we’ve seen this week from the Boston media.
Jerry Thorton (“Thornography”, clever) of 93.7 WEEI calls the Ravens “detestable on every level” and “a despicable organization that has proven time and again their moral compass has no needle and there is no behavior they will not tolerate, enable and cover up if they think the perp can help them.”
He does this while exonerating the Patriots for any responsibility in hiring Aaron Hernandez despite pre-draft concerns about him.
Ryan Kuketz put together a blog explaining why Patriots fans should hate the Ravens. The reasons include Joe Flacco and what he calls “the worst fans in all of sports.”
Sorry, but that title is already taken.
Congratulations, Boston.
