Who Deserves The Fourth Spot?
It’s hard to believe that the Ravens will play their 21st season here in Baltimore in 2016. Let that sink in for a moment.
In many ways the franchise still seems brand new yet to put the team’s tenure in The Land of Pleasant Living into perspective, the Colts played here for 30 seasons and the team is 11 seasons away from fulfilling their 30-year lease at M&T Bank Stadium.
The memories, the accomplishments and those Lombardi Trophies evoke pride and add to the city’s rich sports heritage. The town has been graced by many outstanding players who have come and gone, and as time goes by, it’s only natural to reminisce about their accomplishments and rank them among the town’s all-time greats.
Enter Mt. Rushmore…
Over the years we’ve tinkered with various combinations of four Ravens players on The Mount. Three players are givens and their places indelibly etched into Baltimore sports folklore, all either in the Hall of Fame or can’t miss future inductees. Of course I’m referring to Jonathan Ogden, Ray Lewis and Ed Reed.
The fourth position on The Mount has been open for debate.
For many years most conceded that Matt Stover was deserving of the spot. But that choice was heavily influenced by Stover’s contributions to the 2000 season and the team’s first Super Bowl win. Now that the team has another Super Bowl notch in the belt of their history, Joe Flacco arguably deserves the fourth spot because of his record-setting 2012 post season performance that culminated with a Super Bowl 47 win and MVP.
And then there’s Terrell Suggs, the Ravens’ all-time sack leader, former Defensive Rookie of The Year (2003) and former Defensive Player of the Year (2011). The six-time Pro Bowler’s resume suggests that he’s worthy of Hall of Fame enshrinement and therefore he, not Joe Flacco, who for the moment doesn’t have Canton cred, deserves the fourth spot.
Today, June 3, 2017, we’ve added Marshal Yanda to the poll. The Super Bowl 47 Champion is a 6-time Pro Bowler, two-time 1st Team All Pro and a three-time 2nd Team All Pro who has shown no sign of slowing down. He clearly deserves consideration.
Who do you think is deserving of the final position on the Ravens’ Mount?
