Social media is often criticized, but it does have its redeeming qualities, particularly when an online community takes shape. Perhaps its members never meet. Maybe some do. Those most gifted at the online exchanges have the ability to connect with you – to reach through the cyber world and become a positive influence – a ray of sunshine on a cloudy day. For Ravens fans @RavensEm was such a person.

I never had the pleasure of engaging @RavensEm and today after reading the outpouring of affection for her, I realize I’ve missed out on something, someone very special. And unfortunately I’ll never get that chance. Flockers worldwide have been left heartbroken by this morning’s news that she has passed.

One person left broken by this incredibly positive forcefield was Lacie DeCosta. I asked Lacie if should would write something about @RavensEm to help others understand what she meant to this community within Twitter so that we all might be more like her; so that we all might learn from this tremendous loss and effect more kindness and understanding. ~ Tony Lombardi

Dear #RavensFlock,

Sweet Emili Jane aka RavensEm touched all of us. I instantly felt a connection to her the first time I saw her excitement when Lamar retweeted one of her inspiring quotes. The quote was “You attract more bees with honey than sh**”.

She was over the moon that her favorite Raven took the time to recognize something she did for all of us every day. Make us smile by lifting us up with positivity. Days later she tweeted out that tragedy had struck her family. Both of her parents were in a car accident after coming home from celebrating their Anniversary away together. They both eventually succumbed to their injuries. I reached out to her privately and I tried to give her the same words of encouragement she gave to others every day.

Emili received so much love and support from her Ravens Flock Community she was able to run in her first 1/2 marathon just months after losing her Mom and Dad. Every day, I would see on Twitter how she would pick her friends up with an encouraging message. It amazed me having lost my own father how she could find such strength.

When I finally met Emili last month she greeted me with the biggest hug and we both held on for what may have seemed a little too long. She may not have realized I needed that hug just as much as she needed one from me. We talked for a few hours about life, coping with loss but mostly about the Ravens Flock.

Her love for each and every one of you that she met over the last few months and how you gave her strength when she needed it most. She was a bright light in this world, one that can seem so dark. She will live on through all of you.

She reminded us every day that kindness wins!
