The Ravens are determined not to have injuries derail another season.

Coach John Harbaugh and his staff are analyzing ways to prevent players from being sidelined and plan to change the way they practice.

It’s a proactive step for a team that had 19 players finish last season on Injured Reserve, including several key starters.

“We’re going to approach OTAs differently,” Harbaugh said at this week’s owner meetings. “We’re going to approach training camp, some big-picture schedule differently in terms of the way we ramp and in terms of the way we time practices, how long we’re on the field and what we’re doing on the field and how we pace the rhythm of the practices.”

The Ravens faced an injury problem before the 2021 season even began, with running backs J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards, along with cornerback Marcus Peters, going down in training camp with knee injuries.

Left tackle Ronnie Stanley, who suffered a season-ending ankle injury in 2020, played the regular-season opener against the Las Vegas Raiders but never played another snap the rest of the year after re-aggravating the ailment.

The secondary was completely decimated late in the season when both cornerback Marlon Humphrey (pectoral) and safety DeShon Elliott (pec/biceps) were shut down for the year.

Even quarterback Lamar Jackson missed significant time and appeared in just 12 games, sidelined because of an illness against the Bears and then suffering an ankle injury that kept him out of the final four matchups of the season.

There’s no denying how these injuries impacted the season.

Still, the Ravens showed their mettle.

Despite the setbacks, they were 8-3 out of the gate and were the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoffs. However, as the team suffered more injuries, the challenges were too big to overcome and they finished the year at 8-9, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2017.

So, the team is taking precautions.

The Ravens likely won’t hold a joint practice this summer as a precaution against injuries.

Last year, defensive lineman Derek Wolfe suffered back and hip injuries against the Carolina Panthers in August and was eventually shut down for the season. Wolfe is still healing from the injuries.

Harbaugh also will change the way the Ravens practice.

“It’ll be a little bit shorter, a little more execution-oriented, less competitive type of practice,” Harbaugh said.

The Ravens will retain strength and conditioning coach Steve Saunders.

However, they have taken other proactive steps to reduce injuries, including the hiring of Adrian Dixon from the Titans as the new head athletic trainer. Dixon has extensive NFL experience and he is expected to help with not only preventing injuries but helping rehab sidelined players so they can get back on the field faster.

It was a significant addition to the staff.

“Over the course of the last month, after meeting with multiple qualified candidates, it became quite evident that Adrian possessed all the traits and skills necessary to help us become the best player wellness program in the National Football League,” GM Eric DeCosta said. “We were very impressed by Adrian’s servant leadership, his passion for the challenge, and his vision for our training room.”
