One-on-one drills are favorites for fans in attendance. The quarterback sits back with no pressure and waits for his receiver to break open. It’s akin to those street games of pick-up football when rushers had to count to 7-Mississippi. In other words, the one-on-one drills are heavily slanted in favor of the receiver.
Today, I charted the sessions which included throws mostly from Lamar Jackson and Tyler Huntley. Here’s how they played out with commentary when warranted:
• CB Marlon Humphrey with a Pass Defensed (“PD”) v. WR Tylan Wallace
• WR Zay Flowers beats Jalyn Armour-Davis for a short gain
• CB Brandon Stephens blankets WR Laquon Treadwell, wins the matchup but fails to turn his head. Coverage was tight and could have resulted in an INT if Stephens turns towards the ball.
• WR Nelson Agholor beats CB Kevon Seymour. Nice route from Agholor, finishing with strong hands.
• WR Dontay Demus, Jr. beats CB Kyu Kelly in a close matchup.
• WR James Proche beats CB Jaquan Amos on a post corner. Amos called for holding.
• TE Mark Andrews beats S Kyle Hamilton in tight coverage.
• WR Sean Ryan with a nice back shoulder catch/route to beat CB Corey Mayfield, Jr.
• CB Jordan Swann wins a battle v. WR Shemar Bridges; Bridges with a drop.
• Seymour beats WR Makai Polk due to an overthrown pass given tight coverage.
• Wallace with a catch v. Kelly
• Armour-Davis wins a physical battle v. Agholor only because the ball was well overthrown after a nice sideline route run by Agholor.
• Treadwell gets a catch v. CB Jeremy Lucien.
• Proche with a nice catch on a 9-route; Amos had tight coverage but Huntley dropped a dime on him.
• Ryan torches Mayfield on a go-route down the left sideline for a score.
• Andrews and Hamilton do battle again but the tight coverage is a little more than the back judge could stomach; Hamilton was a bit too physical and was hit with a DPI.
• Stephens with a PD v. Bridges.
• Flowers beats Humphrey on a quick slant.
OTHER NOTES & OBSERVATIONS
The practice started with some teams work and the focus was kickoffs. Taking the lion’s share of the returns were Devin Duvernay, Justice Hill and UDFA Keaton Mitchell…Lamar’s velocity and accuracy were on point today, particularly inside the numbers. His release seems a bit quicker too but perhaps to the naked eye, it appears that way because the other three quarterbacks (Huntley, Anthony Brown and Josh Johnson) have noticeably more deliberate windups. I also liked how he would hit in-motion receivers in stride with quick darts…Props to Flowers who altered his route on two separate occasions to give a scrambling Lamar a downfield option…OBJ’s hustle is noteworthy. On a wheel route that was nicely designed to free up Andrews 20 yards downfield, Beckham raced to Andrews catch point to provide a block to free up the big TE for some YAC…Rashod Bateman ran through some individual drills but did not participate in any scrimmaging…On two successive plays the Ravens connected on go-routes to the right for scores from about 20 yards out. The first was from Brown to Demus; the second from Johnson to Ryan.

During the initial session of 11-on-11’s with some light hitting/tackling, Lamar targeted OBJ in the end zone from 30 yards out on a 9-route to the right. Beckham drew the DPI from Armour-Davis to put the ball at the 1-yard line. Four plays later there was a turnover on downs. Hill carried for no gain on the first play; Gordon lost 2 on the second; Lamar threw incomplete to Andrews on the third; and Lamar missed OBJ in the end zone thanks to tight coverage from Armour-Davis. After the play Patrick Queen and Gordon got into a brief shoving match. It was clear that the defense planned to be more physical on this afternoon.

Queen had a solid day, was fast to the ball and played physical. He and Roquan Smith were solid in their zone assignments. Roquan matched Queen’s physicality…G John Simpson was lit up by an edge defender towards the end of practice, much to the delight of the first-team defense which was off to the back side watching.
More Camp Notes coming in the morning with a focus on Duvernay, Mitchell, Armour-Davis, Stephens and Hamilton.
