Ravens Projected 53-man Roster 1.0

Reading Time: 3 minutes

With preseason game number one complete and now just two and a half weeks from the roster-trimming date, fellow RSR writer Dev Panchwagh and I don our general manager hats for our first 53-man roster prediction of the summer.

This season is particularly tough to predict given the talent at some positions and depth at others. Ozzie Newsome and company will have some tough decisions to make in the coming weeks.

After several back and forth sessions with Dev, here we go:

OFFENSE

Quarterbacks (2)

In: Joe Flacco, Ryan Mallett

NOTES: The Ravens have seemingly made their minds up already regarding their backup quarterback situation. With Flacco on the mend, it’s Mallett’s job once again. After a rough two weeks of camp, Mallett performed well in the preseason opener, thus easing the minds of the front office.

Running Backs (4)

In: Justin Forsett, Buck Allen, Terrance West, Kenneth Dixon

Out: Lorenzo Taliaferro

Notes: Taliaferro remains on the physically unable to perform list and has yet to finish a practice this summer. Given his injury history and the stellar performances of the other backs, this was an easy decision.

Fullback (1)

In: Kyle Juszczyk

Notes: The Ravens made it a point this offseason to get back to running the football. That decision alone secures Juice’s future for 2016. On top of that, he’s been used in numerous roles this summer.

Wide Receiver (6)

In: Steve Smith Sr., Mike Wallace,  Michael Campanaro, Kamar Aiken, Breshad Perriman, Chris Moore

Bubble: Jeremy Butler, Keenan Reynolds

Out: Chris Matthews, Kaelin Clay, Dobson Collins, Chuck Jacobs

NOTES: This was one of the harder decisions to make given the talent and the lack of health presented by wide receiver corps. With Senior and Perriman expected to return in time for Week 1, it means Butler and Reynolds will have to play mistake-free football for the remainder of the summer. It won’t be easy for either one of them.

Offensive Line (8)

In: Jeremy Zuttah, Marshal Yanda, Rick Wagner, Ryan Jensen, John Urschel, Ronnie Stanley, Alex Lewis, Vlad Ducasse

Bubble: De’Ondre Wesley

Out: Jarell Broxton, Blaine Clausell, Anthony Fabiano, Stephane Nembot, Matt Skura, James Hurst

NOTES: The battle for the last spot along the offensive line gets narrower by the day. It appears as if Ducasse has the upper hand over Wesley in reps throughout camp and against Carolina. While it’s not a foregone conclusion that Wesley doesn’t make it, he will need to make the most out of his reps the remainder of camp.

Tight End (4)

In: Benjamin Watson, Dennis Pitta, Crockett Gillmore (IR), Maxx Williams

Bubble: Darren Waller, Nick Boyle

Out: Daniel Brown

NOTES: It’s a numbers game at one of the deepest positions the Ravens have. His suspension aside, Waller finds himself on the bubble as he makes the transition from wide receiver to tight end. If Gillmore ends up being placed on injured reserve, it may pave the way for Waller to secure a spot upon returning from his four-game suspension. While Brown has been used extensively in training camp and with positive results, he will be hard-pressed to make the roster given the talent at the position.

DEFENSE

Defensive Line (7)

In: Brandon Williams, Timmy Jernigan, Carl Davis, Lawrence Guy, Brent Urban, Kapron Lewis-Moore, Willie Henry

Out: Trevon Coley, Michael Pierce

NOTES: Not much change among this group along the the defensive front. Rookie Willie Henry has not shown much during camp; however, he turned in a solid outing in his first preseason game as a Raven. There isn’t much wiggle room for this unit, which will feature plenty of rotation throughout the season.

Linebackers (8)

In: Terrell Suggs, Elvis Dumervil, C.J. Mosley, Kamalei Correa, Za’Darius Smith, Zach Orr, Albert McClellan, Matt Judon

Bubble: Chris Carter

Out: Arthur Brown, Victor Ochi, Mario Ojemudia, Kavell Conner, Brennen Beyer, Patrick Onwuasor

NOTES: All eyes will be on the conditioning of Suggs and Dumervil upon their returns from the physically unable to perform list. If either one has any setbacks it may open up the door for six-year veteran Chris Carter to make the roster. It’s likely the Ravens find a place for Ochi and Onwuasor – if not on the practice squad, expect one or both to “trip” in the parking lot entering the building a la the O’s Ubaldo Jimenez in 2014.

Cornerbacks (6)

In: Jimmy Smith, Shareece Wright, Tavon Young, Jerraud Powers, Will Davis, Maurice Canady

Out: Kyle Arrington, Julian Wilson, Sheldon Price

NOTES: The focus has been on the secondary the entire offseason and with training camp in full swing, Arrington and Wilson find themselves on the outside looking in. Price received a lot of reps against the Panthers, but had little to show for it.

Safeties (5)

In : Eric Weddle, Lardarius Webb, Kendrick Lewis, Anthony Levine, Terrence Brooks

Out: Matt Elam

NOTES: Matt Elam finds himself as the odd man out in the safety corps this upcoming season. After failing to live up to his first-round status, the Ravens cut ties with Elam given Anthony Levine’s ability to play linebacker and prowess as a special teams standout.

SPECIALISTS (3)

In: Sam Koch, Justin Tucker, Morgan Cox

NOTES: The Wolfpack returns….
