Following a players’ day off Tuesday, the team returned to practice on Wednesday at the Under Armour Performance Center in Owings Mills. With just eight days remaining until their first preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers, the Ravens, under sunny skies, took to the field starting at 1 p.m. to begin week two of training camp.

The Ravens linebacking unit had a different look today, with C.J. Mosley taking over for veteran Daryl Smith, who missed practice for unknown reasons. Mosley had another stand out day, disrupting the Ravens offense including getting past Kelechi Osemele to stop running back Ray Rice for several losses. Mosley also stood out on special teams, drawing the applause of special teams coordinator Jerry Rosburg for some outstanding blocks he made.

Linebacker Josh Bynes also took snaps with the first team defense, replacing Mosley on occasion. Bynes started a career-high six games for the Ravens in 2013 while producing a career-high in tackles with 41 (19 solo). With the influx of young talent added to the roster, Bynes does provide experienced depth to the position but will need to have a solid camp to make the roster.

Other Notes and Observations

Cornerback Chykie Brown continued to struggle once again on Wednesday. During two-minute drills, Brown was torched by wide receiver Torrey Smith for a long touchdown. Brown gave up a long touchdown to wide receiver Marlon Brown as well later on in the day.

The defensive line had a scare early on in practice when rookies Timmy Jernigan and Brent Urban were both injured on the same play. Urban was on the turf for a while with what looked like a left knee injury and was carted off the field. Jernigan was seen holding his back and walked of gingerly with the trainers.

Linebacker John Simon made his first standout play of training camp when he rushed past the second team offense to sack Tyrod Taylor during the two-minute portion of practice.

Newly signed cornerback Marrio Norman was on the field for the first time practicing with the team. Norman was seen running with the third team defense. At first sight, Norman seems to be in good shape. He looked sharp during cornerback drills. Safety Will Hill had a nice day of practice including a pass defense on wide receiver Jeremy Butler.

Defensive end DeAngelo Tyson was solid on multiple pass plays on the first team defense. During 11-on-11 drills, Tyson batted down two of Joe Flacco’s passes.

*The Ravens practice will begin at 8:30 am tomorrow instead of 10 a.m.*
