OWINGS MILLS — Greg Mattison has accepted the Baltimore Ravens’ offer to join their defensive staff, according to University of Florida coach Urban Meyer. Mattison, who was the Gators’ co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach, is expected to coach the Ravens’ linebackers.
No official announcement was made Sunday, but Mattison could be introduced by the Ravens as soon as today. Mattison informed Meyer of his decision Sunday morning.
Meyer told Florida reporters Sunday that Mattison initially turned down the Ravens, but accepted a second, increased contract offer. Meyer added that it was an emotional decision for Mattison to leave the college ranks.
"We’re going to miss Greg," Meyer said. "He’s a man’s man."
Mattison coached with Harbaugh at Western Michigan in the 1980s and is a former defensive coordinator at Notre Dame and Michigan. He also has prior coaching stints at Texas A&M, Navy and Northwestern.
