Baltimore is expected to address the cornerback position after narrowly missing out on secondary targets like South Florida’s Mike Jenkins and Virginia Tech’s Brandon Flowers on Saturday.
After heavy trading, the Ravens’ haul of picks includes the 71st, 86th and 99th selections of the third round.
"We get a chance to do what I think our scouts do best," general manager Ozzie Newsome said. "We should be able to bring in a lot of depth to this football team beginning in the third round with three picks."
After drafting Delaware quarterback Joe Flacco and Rutgers running back Ray Rice in the first round and second round, respectively, Baltimore is expected to seek talent for the secondary, including safety, where they currently lack any backups to starters Ed Reed and Dawan Landry.
Boise State cornerback Orlando Scandrick, who has 4.32 speed, Eastern Kentucky’s Antwaun Molden or Oklahoma’s Reggie Smith could be potential targets for the Ravens. Both Scandrick and Molden had predraft visits with Baltimore.
"There are definitely some players," Ravens director of college scouting Eric DeCosta said of the remaining cornerbacks.
The Ravens could use some depth at inside linebacker and are high on the University of Miami’s Tavares Gooden, who had a private workout for team officials last week. UNLV’s Beau Bell, Maryland linebacker Erin Henderson, Penn State’s Dan Connor and Georgia Tech’s Philip Wheeler remain available.
Rutgers offensive guard/tackle Jeremy Zuttah or Texas’ Tony Hills could be nice fits, too.
Hampton defensive end Kendall Langford has a lot of pass-rushing ability, and Maryland defensive tackle Dre’ Moore has a fairly high grade, too.
The Ravens also need a tight end since backup Quinn Sypniewski tore his anterior cruciate ligament at last week’s minicamp, and rugged Cal blocking tight end Craig Stevens could be under consideration as well as Tennessee’s massive Brad Cottam (6-foot7, 270 pounds), Michigan State’s Kellen Davis and Louisville’s Gary Barnidge.
There’s also safeties Dajuan Morgan, Josh Barrett, Thomas Decoud and Tom Zbikowski to consider.
"Scouts love picks," DeCosta said. "We’ll do a lot of work tonight in restacking the board, reassessing. I might have to watch some more tape, get more of a feel and compare a couple of guys. When you have guys that are real close, you have to restack the board."
Newsome said that last week’s minicamp revealed a need for adding depth and skill at several positions.
"We needed an influx of talent, that’s something that John Harbaugh had talked about, and having that minicamp really showed that to us," Newsome said. "Now what we have the opportunity to do is to match what we thought was a deep draft to having the ability to pick a lot of players. This was a deep draft, and we were able to get the picks to utilize them in this draft."
Newsome declined to reveal whether it was Jenkins and Flowers that Baltimore was looking to draft, but it was fairly obvious what the Ravens were looking to do at those junctures.
"There were two players that we had rated real high," Newsome said. "We would not have traded away that 38th pick if one of those two players had made it there."
