Notebook: Cody, Cousins square off

Reading Time: 4 minutes
OWINGS MILLS — Something snapped inside of Baltimore Ravens outside linebacker Dan Cody.

This time, though, it was just his temper. Not another injury.

Upset after being driven into the ground during a non-contact drill by aggressive rookie offensive tackle Oniel Cousins, Cody shoved Cousins and a fight ensued.

A large pileup commenced with other players joining in after Cousins tackled Cody as he ripped off Cousins’ helmet. Order was quickly restored.

"It was just kind of a misunderstanding," Cody said. "He kind of fell on me. I’ve been through too much the last three years to have somebody fall on me, but it’s just how it goes. Tempers fly a little bit."

Cousins, who squared off with defensive tackle Amon Gordon at another minicamp that set off a huge brawl, is building a reputation for being quick to throw a punch.

"I was just trying to finish a block," Cousins said. "We’re all out there competing. At the end of the day, we’re all on one team. What happens on the field stays on the field."

Added Ravens coach John Harbaugh: "Oniel’s been involved in two now, hasn’t he? We’re not keeping track of wins or losses. We’re just trying to get back on the line and learn the next play as fast as we can."

Since being drafted in the second round out of Oklahoma, Cody has spent the first three seasons of his NFL career on injured reserve with various knee and foot injuries.

He’s hoping his luck has finally turned.

"I think I have finally turned the corner on my injuries," Cody said. "I feel like I’ve been able to take a few shots here and there and body up with some bigger guys.

"When you get hurt so many times in a row, you feel like you’re jinxed, but it’s behind me now. Now that I’m back on the field, I feel like my old self."

FLACCO FLINGS IT: Rookie first-round quarterback Joe Flacco had some impressive throws, most notably a tight spiral to Demetrius Williams for a touchdown in heavy traffic during a red-zone drill.

Flacco’s arm strength surpassed his accuracy, but he seems to be gradually getting the hang of the offense.

"I think I understand what they’ve given me so far," Flacco said. "I’m not sure how much they have left to give us. "I feel like I’m picking it up pretty well, and I’m trying to do my best.

"It’s obviously different than being in college when you’re the starting quarterback and you know everything that’s going on. When you’re the rookie and not familiar with running the offense, you try and go out there and act like you are."

Meanwhile, Flacco’s agent, Joe Linta, has held three meetings with Ravens chief negotiator Par Moriarty at team headquarters.

"It’s going well," Flacco said. "Joe calls me each time he comes down from Connecticut and lets me know how it’s going. I’m sure they’ll get it done on time."

ON THE MOVE: Rookie free agent Joe Reitz is learning how to play offensive tackle after the former Western Michigan basketball standout arrived as a tight end project.

"Joe looks more natural at tackle than he did at tight end," Harbaugh said. "He’s athletic for an offensive tackle. He does have to gain a lot of weight and become a lot stronger. For an offensive tackle, he’s a smooth, fluid guy."

Listed at 6-foot-7, 256 pounds, Reitz said he currently weighs 282 pounds and hopes to bulk up to 295 pounds by training camp.

"It’s not bad when they tell you to go eat as much as you can and go gain the weight, I’m sure a lot of people would like to have that problem," Reitz said. "It’s definitely an adjustment and I have to get a lot bigger and stronger. Ultimately, I will weigh well over 300 pounds."

INJURY UPDATE: Offensive tackle Jared Gaither didn’t practice due to migraine headaches.

"We’ve got to get some tests," Harbaugh said.

Tight end Daniel Wilcox jogged on the side and participated in some individual drills and is on target to recover fully from toe surgery by late July.

"We expect Dan Wilcox to be full-go the first day of training camp," Harbaugh said. "He was out here running individuals this week, and he looked pretty good."

Rookie tight end Scott Kuhn is on crutches after suffering a major knee injury last week. Linebacker Mike Smith (shoulder) and tight end Lee Vickers (hand) didn’t practice.

Cornerback David Pittman (foot) returned to practice.

QUICK HITS: Among those not attending the voluntary workout: running back Willis McGahee, linebackers Ray Lewis and Bart Scott, cornerbacks Chris McAlister and Samari Rolle, safety Ed Reed and defensive end Trevor Pryce. "It doesn’t detract from practice because we’re having great practices," Harbaugh said. … Harbaugh singled out linebacker Jarret Johnson for praise. "Double-J is a guy who has been here every single lift, every single run, he’s made every single practice," Harbaugh said. "He has really emerged as one of the real leaders on the defense." … The team has been encouraged by tight end Todd Heap’s progress from a hamstring injury. "He’ll tell me, ‘Coach, you haven’t seen anything yet,’" Harbaugh said. "So, I’m looking forward to seeing the rest of it. He’s had a couple of good weeks here." … The Ravens ran a Statue of Liberty play with Kyle Boller and also had Troy Smith run the option.
