Martin, who lists Owings Mills as his residence on the citation, was charged with a minor misdemeanor, but wasn’t arrested. A court date is expected within the next few weeks, and a $100 fine is the maximum fine that can be assessed.
TSA screeners discovered three bags of a substance suspected to be marijuana on Martin’s person at roughly 5 p.m. Saturday when he was checking in for a flight, according to Cleveland public information officer Thomas Stacho.
"The bags were in his possession as he attempted to check in for a flight," Lt. Stacho said in a telephone interview. "He may not have to go to court necessarily. He may be able to pay a fine. A minor misdemeanor is the equivalent to a traffic ticket."
Stacho added that Martin, 23, has the same birthdate as the Ravens’ third-year defensive back.
An exact court date won’t be assigned by court officials until today at the soonest, according to Stacho.
Ravens team spokesman Kevin Byrne told the Associated Press that Martin has denied that the incident happened.
It’s unclear what effect, if any, the citation could potentially have on the cornerback’s status in the NFL’s substance-abuse program.
There haven’t been any other reported incidents with the law or violations of the league’s substance-abuse policies involving Martin since he was drafted by the Ravens in 2006.
A former sixth-round draft pick from Wyoming, Martin is a Denver native who played in a career-high 16 games last season with three starts. The 5-foot-10, 202-pounder registered a career-high 40 tackles and two interceptions.
As a rookie, Martin played in eight games and posted one tackle and four special-teams tackles.
In three seasons at Wyoming before declaring for the draft after his junior year, he had 135 career tackles, 21 pass deflections, six interceptions, three fumble recovers, two forced fumbles and two sacks.
