Washington is scheduled to take a physical Friday and will sign a one-year contract, barring any unanticipated medical snags.
"He’s going to sign with Baltimore," said Chad Speck, Washington’s agent, during a telephone interview with the 24×7. "Kelley decided that was the right spot for him, and he views it as a great opportunity and a great organization. He’s excited to get started."
Washington tried out for the Ravens during last weekend’s full-team minicamp, impressing team officials with his size and athleticism. Two other free agent wideouts, Jerry Porter and Tab Perry, also tried out.
Washington is a former Cincinnati Bengals third-round draft pick from the University of Tennessee who played for Ravens quarterbacks coach Hue Jackson when he was coaching the Bengals’ receivers.
"I think Kelley absolutely impressed them," Speck said. "He has some familiarity with Hue Jackson. Hopefully, everything will work out in the next few days."
Washington caught one pass last season with the New England Patriots, blocking one punt. In six NFL seasons, Washington has caught 73 career passes for 896 yards and nine touchdowns.
He was cut by New England in February, two years after signing a five-year contract with a maximum value of $22 million.
The Ravens’ three top wide receivers — Derrick Mason (shoulder surgery), Mark Clayton (undisclosed) and Demetrius Williams (Achilles’ tendon surgery) — were all sidelined during the minicamp.
"For the last two seasons, I was able to help lead New England on special teams," Washington said Sunday. "I want to continue helping on special teams, but also be able to come in and compete for a wide receiver spot."
