The “Tide” could be high for Ravens in 2010 Draft

Reading Time: 2 minutes

It’s no secret that Ozzie Newsome has an affinity for players who donned the colors of the Crimson Tide. But that said, opponents might play right into the hands of Newsome if they think he’ll maneuver a draft board based upon emotion.

The team’s organizational strength and depth in the scouting department won’t allow it. The Ravens infrastructure is built to encourage independent thought without the biases of peer pressure or a pecking order.

That’s not to say that a player under Alabama’s head coach Nick Saban won’t receive a little more attention from Ozzie and it would surprise no one if oft-overlooked CB Kareem Jackson is high on Newsome’s radar screen.

Saban has a solid track record of successfully graduating cornerbacks to the NFL. After all he was a defensive back during his playing days at Kent State University.

Jackson is projected as a late first round to mid second round pick. Don’t be surprised if the Ravens trade back in Round 1 as part of an effort to recoup the third round pick that they lost in the Anquan Boldin trade and then set their sights on this national champion.

Here’s the scouting report on Jackson from Will Spencer of Draft Breakdown. ~ Tony Lombardi

Strengths

Outstanding man coverage skills. Does a very nice job anticipating routes, showing good instincts for a cover corner. Better in man coverage than zone, but can play both. Comfortable on film playing press and off-man coverage. Fluid hips. Stays low in back pedal and doesn’t lose speed when turning and running. Good body control and balance. Quick feet. Closes on the ball carrier well and not afraid of contact. Very good ball skills and displays good hands when given the opportunity. Physical with the receiver in press coverage and isn’t afraid to fight for the ball and/or position. Adequate height/weight. Three year starter with no injury history. Added bonus as a special teams player.

Weaknesses

Not aggressive in run support and is only an average tackler. Has trouble getting off blockers. Doesn’t possess ideal speed. Can get over aggressive in coverage and will sometimes gamble.

Analysis

Jackson might be the best corner no one is talking about in this year’s draft. Very solid from top to bottom. Man coverage skills are among the best in this class. Smart player that was a part of a difficult defense to learn. Should be able to start for an NFL team from day one. Isn’t getting the attention he deserves because teams just didn’t throw his way as often during his sophomore and junior seasons. Could have potentially been the top ranked CB if he stayed for his senior season.
