OWINGS MILLS — Former Baltimore Ravens kicker Matt Stover will officially announce his retirement today.
The team is holding a press conference for Stover, which will also be attended by owner Steve Bisciotti, coach John Harbaugh and general manager Ozzie Newsome.
The Ravens will also make an announcement regarding Stover and the team going forward.
Stover is the all-time leading scorer in franchise history and one of the most accurate kickers in NFL history.
He last kicked for the Indianapolis Colts two years ago as an injury replacement for Adam Vinatieri.
Stover was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2000 when he provided much of the offense for the Ravens’ Super Bowl championship team.
Stover kicked for two decades in the NFL, spending the majority of his career with the original Cleveland Browns and moving with the team to Maryland in 1996.
The Ravens went with Steve Hauschka during the 2009 season instead of Stover, which turned out to be a mistake as Hauschka had to be replaced when he missed a series of clutch kicks.
Now, they have Pro Bowl kicker Billy Cundiff under a multi-year deal.
Stover, 43, ranks fourth in league history with 2,004 points and 471 field goals.
He also ranks seventh in field goal accuracy with an 83.7 percent success rate.
He connected on 471 of 563 career field goals, making 354 of 418 attempts with the Ravens and connected on 402 of 403 extra points.
He’s the Ravens’ all-time leading scorer with 1,464 points.
A former New York Giants 12th-round draft pick in the 1990 NFL draft, Stover signed with the Browns in 1991 as a Plan B free agent.
