The battle between Billy Cundiff and Justin Tucker rages on. Last night the pair of place kickers accounted for all of the Ravens scoring. Cundiff connected from 33 and 44 yards out while Tucker hit from 45 and 50 yards out.
At no point during camp has Tucker fallen behind Cundiff in this faceoff and if anything as of late, Tucker has begun to distance himself a bit as the duo crosses the halfway marker and begin to make the turn towards the homestretch.
According to Cundiff, as reported by BaltimoreRavens.com, the job is his to lose.
“The way the coaches have approached me and the way everybody in the organization has approached it is that if I kick well, this is my job,” Cundiff said after the game. “This isn’t necessarily a competition between myself and Justin. This is really a competition with myself and how good I can be.”
Somewhere along the line, either Cundiff heard what he wanted to hear or the Ravens never expected such a push from Tucker, something that Cundiff seems to dismiss.
“We’ve just been a little more aggressive,” Cundiff said. “We’ve got a young guy in camp, so kicking 65-yard field goals seems to be like the flavor of the week.”
Well the old flavor (Cundiff) hasn’t exactly had a stellar career and if you remove the apparent aberration (his 2010 Pro Bowl Season), Cundiff has actually been a below average kicker with ample time on the unemployment line during his 10 year career.
And if this thing plays out the way it has so far, Cundiff will be back on that line and seeking out his own new “flavor.”
