More than 150 fans and local sports radio and television personalities joined forces on Saturday to raise money for the Ed Block Courage Award Foundation during their annual Celebrity Mini-Golf Tournament.
2011 Ed Block Courage Award winner and Ravens long snapper Morgan Cox joined min-golf foursomes and mingled with fans throughout the day. Celebrities including WJZ’s Mark Viviano, Bob Turk and Ron Matz were grouped with fans for a round of golf and a cookout after the event.
“This is just awesome. Golfing with a Raven – now that is something to brag about.” stated Bob Heller of Baltimore, whose family attended the afternoon session of the event.
Many of the sponsors of the event were local businesses, emphasizing the importance of the involving the community in the foundation’s efforts to raise money to overcome child abuse.
“It’s a huge part,” said Paul Mittermeier, director of communications for the foundation. “This is a good chance for local businesses to come and bring everybody together, have a good time and do something for a really good cause.”
I was placed with a family of four for the event and they carried me the entire afternoon. “I hope your writing and covering the Ravens is much better than your golf game.” they joked. The entire afternoon was filled with laughs and jokes for a wonderful cause.
The Ed Block Courage Award Foundation is dedicated to improving the lives of abused, neglected and at-risk children and ending the cycle of abuse. The purpose is to raise awareness and prevention of child abuse. That objective is coupled with the Foundation’s commitment to celebrating players of inspiration in the NFL.
Each year, the Ed Block Courage Awards honors those National Football League players who exemplify commitments to the principles of sportsmanship and courage. This award is unique in that the recipients are selected solely by a vote of their teammates. Every fall all thirty-two teams conduct a vote, which results in each team selecting their Ed Block Courage Award recipient for the year.
The Courage Award has become one of the most esteemed honors bestowed upon a player in the NFL. I have had the great fortune of covering this Foundation and to see the way they are changing people’s lives is truly heartwarming.
