Might a Veteran Like Breaston Fill the Void Left by “Q”?

It’s been a wild offseason in Charm City and the moves that the team has made have all been notable. Every hole has been filled except for the one that many fans wanted complete the most—another wide receiver.

I have no problem with Torrey Smith and Jacoby Jones being the top two on the depth chart, but it gets shaky at best after that.

I previously wrote an article addressing the talent that is already on the roster and may be able to fill the void. Is it possible that the Ravens could make one final move in the coming months?

Tandon Doss, LaQuan Williams, and Tommy Streeter are the next viable options, but it is very possible that they could not pan out. If not, a backup veteran that has already proven himself could work to help Joe Flacco have another Super Bowl-bound season.

According to RSR’s salary cap guru Brian McFarland, the Ravens will have plenty of cap space to sign a wide receiver come June 2nd, when Bernard Pollard comes off of the books. The team has already paid key players like Elvis Dumervil and Joe Flacco, so the signing, if it happens, would have to follow Ozzie Newsome’s credo of “Right Player, Right Price”.

I wouldn’t mind seeing the Ravens make a move, and a guy like Steve Breaston could be an under-the-radar option. He was released by Kansas City, and has plenty of experience playing in the NFL. Playing for six years and having over 250 receptions in his career, Breaston could be not only “depth”, but a solid, high-quality weapon. He has shown flashes of excellence as in 2008, he went over 1000 yards on 113 targets.

A player like Breaston would be great for the offense, but what I would be aiming for if I was playing GM, would be a player to help Joe Flacco stay confident. Let’s be honest, Anquan Boldin was somewhat of a security blanket for Flacco down the home stretch. Torrey Smith is dynamite, but no receiver will thrive to their greatest ability without at least two other good receivers beside him.

Don’t sleep on the possibility of the Ravens making this move as there are plenty of players on the market that could fill the open hole.
