Thousands of fans gathered at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen, Maryland on Sunday afternoon and not for IronBirds’ baseball.
Instead it was to watch Ravens cornerback Lardarius Webb’s annual charity softball game to benefit his Lardarius Webb Foundation.
“The turnout was great. Without the fans, this event wouldn’t even be possible. Just knowing my foundation, they’re giving to a great cause. It’s all about the kids. I love the kids.” stated Webb who took it easy during the game as he continues to recover from a torn ACL.
Joining Webby were several teammates including Torrey Smith, Sam Koch, Justin Tucker, Brandon Williams, Gino Gradkowski, Bryan Hall, Morgan Cox, Matt Elam, Michael Oher, Courtney Upshaw, Christian Thompson, Marc Anthony, Moe Lee, Tommy Streeter, LaQuan Williams, Tyrod Taylor, Ramon Harewood, Jack Cornell, Antoine McClain, Gerrard Sheppard, Pernell McPhee, Anthony Allen, DeAngelo Tyson, Ed Dickson, Omar Brown, Chykie Brown, Asa Jackson, Josh Bynes, James Ihedigbo, Bobby Rainey, Jimmy Smith and last but not least Jacoby Jones.
Jones was greeted with a huge ovation to which he responded by doing Ray Lewis’ Squirrel dance and the entire stadium went wild with cheers.
Webb always has the support of the entire team and it showed this afternoon. .
“Anytime my teammate has something, I’ll be there. It comes with the territory.” replied Torrey Smith on his participation in the game.
Several local radio personalities from 105.7 The Fan in Baltimore joined in the game including Mark Zinno, Jeremy Conn and Glenn Younes.
The game was won by the offense as they out hit the defense with Sam Koch and Bobby Rainey hitting towering homeruns.
The day was all about giving back to those in need and the fans who support the Ravens each and every year.
“It’s very important,” Webb said. “It’s all about the fans. They come support us all year long. They travel. To come out and take pictures with them, give them autographs, interact with them, it’s important. We’re coming out here and enjoying it while we’re here.”
On a Sunday when the weather was warm it left the fans with somewhat of a quench to their thirst for football watching their favorite players swinging bats and fielding ground-balls.
No doubt they are ready for the season as the Super Bowl Champs prepare to defend their title.
