Agents have 99 problems, and now Jay-Z is one

Rap artist Jay-Z isn’t just in the iPods of our athletes anymore; now he’s in their corners and business meetings too.

Jay-Z, one of the most successful and popular rap artists of all time, recently launched his own sports agency, Roc Nation Sports. Now, its only been a few months since Jay revealed that he wanted to start an agency, but in those months some big name athletes have shown interest in jumping to Roc Nation.

New York Yankee second baseman Robinson Cano, New York Jets rookie quarterback Geno Smith, Oklahoma City Thunder star Kevin Durant, and WNBA’s Tulsa Shock rookie guard Skylar Diggins are some of the athletes to team up with Jay.

Since some Ravens players are becoming more recognizable on a national level, doesn’t it make sense that they would want to be represented by the biggest name out there? A few years ago you wouldn’t have imagined that players on the Ravens would be mentioned with some of the superstars that Roc Nation has signed, but now that image isn’t so far off.

The Ravens have some of the most recognizable names and faces in the league, and after winning the Super Bowl, it makes sense Jay-Z would want to sign some champions.

In a recent interview with New York’s Power 105.1 radio station, Jay-Z caused some commotion when he said he would be a “problem” for agents in the future.

”Those guys have been sitting around just doing the typical things…knock on the same doors.  They go to Nike, they do the contract and then they sit back.  They don’t do anything else.” Jay-Z said, according to www.Forbes.com.

“So they don’t want me around because now they have to do something for these athletes,” he went on.  “The bigger goal is for all artists to get their just due. Not to get half-ass agents or people who rob them or people who don’t care about their finances.”

Many agents in the sports world are not fond of the way Jay-Z has come onto the scene. His agency has quickly become one of the most desirable agencies on the market just from name alone. Athletes want to be associated with Jay-Z because of the buzz around his name.  Agents now are upset that their clients, who they worked so hard to sign, may now just up and leave their agency for the new, shiny agency down the street.

Everyone knows Jay-Z is king of the music world, so why wouldn’t he try and conquer the sports world too? I wouldn’t be surprised if in a short while a couple of Ravens decide to switch agencies to Roc Nation. With their superstar status, why not team up with the guy who goes home to Beyoncé every night? It seems to me he knows what he’s doing.
