Torrey Smith is having a solid season for the Ravens. However, the rest of their receivers wish they could say the same.
The trade of Anquan Boldin, and the injury to tight end Dennis Pitta, has left a void the Ravens have been unable to fill adequately all season. Other than Smith, quarterback Joe Flacco lacks a reliable go-to guy, making it easier for teams to take away Smith, particularly in crucial situations.
It’s one of many reasons why the Ravens (4-6) have struggled offensively, and why they are in serious danger of missing the playoffs. Smith ranks 15th in the NFL with 785 yards receiving, and he ranks fourth in yards per catch (17.1) among receivers that have caught at least 30 passes. However, where is Smith’s wingman? The Ravens don’t have another receiver that ranks in the top 100 in receiving yards. Tight end Dallas Clark (311 yards) is 108th. Marlon Brown (307 yards) is 109th, and Tandon Doss (305 yards) is 110th.
It has been one thing or another keeping a consistent No. 2 receiver from emerging. Jacoby Jones missed four games with a knee injury, and hasn’t provided the big plays he did last season. Marlon Brown (five touchdowns) has been the best red zone threat, but he missed Sunday’s loss to the Bears with a knee injury. Tandon Doss (18 catches) had a critical drop in overtime against the Bears, and has yet to score a touchdown. Clark (three touchdowns) has had a strange season, making some spectacular catches, but mixing in some drops. At least Clark has been more productive than Ed Dickson (11 catches, 152 yards, one TD) or Brandon Stokley (nine catches, 79 yards).
