Baltimore Raven Matt Elam got a taste of NFL life during his rookie campaign in 2013.
The young man out of Florida had some highs and lows throughout the season which was expected as the Ravens chose Elam with the 32nd pick in the draft. Not only has Elam learned some very valuable lessons on the field, what he has learned off the field is even more valuable.
Throughout the year many players are involved in community efforts either through the team or their own foundations. Tuesdays around the league are usually players’ days off yet Elam could always be found giving back either through NFL Play 60 and the Ravens or lending a hand to other teammates who hosted events to improve the lives of so many.
Providing life lessons for today’s youth while incorporating the skills of football is something Elam takes great pride in with his brother Abe, who started the Team Elam Foundation.
Recently Team Elam and former Ravens wide receiver Anquan Boldin and his Anquan Boldin Foundation teamed up to host the 2nd Annual Florida vs Georgia Clash of the Scholar Athletes All-Star Game. This highly anticipated week-long event will serve as a means of bringing young, talented football players together, encouraging academic excellence, sportsmanship and youth empowerment.
The All-Star week promoted a competitive but positive environment. The high school seniors were all chosen based on their academic excellence first in mind. Each student demonstrates a 2.5 minimum GPA, at least one ACT and/or SAT score, and registration with the NCAA Eligibility Center. The students have also demonstrated the very best football among their peers.
These select student-athletes received football training which began on Monday, December 30, with an opportunity to be coached by the most talented high school coaches and pro-athletes. Additionally, the students conducted daily professional seminars in the areas of finance, legal and media experts, with an effort to expose the student athletes to other professions and life practices.
As Elam heads into his sophomore season with the Ravens there is no doubt he will continue to work hard to become the best player he can be for the purple and black.
While there is still a learning curve for Elam on the football field, he is off to a great start in his positives of the field.
