INDIANAPOLIS — When Ravens coach John Harbaugh hired Thomas Hammock to be Baltimore’s running backs coach in February, he referenced Hammock’s resume.
Hammock, a former college running back, spent the last three years as the running backs coach at Wisconsin.
During those three years, Hammock helped Montee Ball develop into a second-round NFL draft pick and coached a tandem of Melvin Gordon and James White in 2013 that ran for a combined 3,053 yards, the highest total in NCAA history for a pair of teammates.
Even before that, Hammock coached Garrett Wolfe at Northern Illinois. Wolfe, who played four years in the NFL, rushed for 3,508 yards and 34 touchdowns in his two seasons under Hammock and was a third-team All-American as a senior in 2006.
“He’ll be great [for the Ravens running backs],” Wisconsin linebacker Chris Borland said at the NFL Scouting Combine, later adding, “He’s outstanding. He had a Heisman finalist, Melvin Gordon, James White. He’s an outstanding coach.”
Borland, a projected early-round pick who met with Baltimore in Indianapolis, said he saw Hammock at the combine Friday night and talked to him for the first time since he took the job with the Ravens.
“He’s a little bit of a drill sergeant [as a coach],” Borland said. “He gets after guys, and he gets the most out of them. He works them really hard. And at the same time, he’s there for them, so they have great personal relationships and working relationships.”
