Baltimore Ravens star wide receiver Torrey Smith has been a pillar of the Baltimore community since joining the Ravens in 2011.
On Tuesday, Smith, who partnered with Scholastic Book Fairs, transformed a room at Dickey Hill Elementary and Middle School into a literary oasis.
“Torrey’s Reading Oasis” was created as part of the charitable programming of the Torrey Smith Foundation and its focus on improving literacy in area schools. The Reading Oasis will serve 370 students at the school, providing access to age-appropriate books and a comfortable place to read.
It wasn’t just a “stop in and say hello” event. Torrey stayed for several hours and spoke with students on how important education is for each and every person. Smith also read aloud in the new Reading Oasis to a smaller group of students who were the winners of a school reading contest. The former Terp also made sure to greet some of the school’s honor roll students as well.
There were no shortages of smiles for those in attendance either from Torrey or from the students and staff.
