OWINGS MILLS — Baltimore Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome and coach John Harbaugh have both said the same thing in recent weeks: The Ravens are still looking to improve their roster.
Newsome said it after the NFL draft. Harbaugh said it after an organized team activity practice Thursday.
And with June now here, Harbaugh acknowledged that Baltimore could make some moves.
Unrestricted free agents signed after June 1 do not factor into the compensatory pick formula. Even aside from that, teams can cut players after June 1 to lessen the cap hit for the coming season, and a player may get released this summer that could help the Ravens.
“I think we’re aware of the guys that are still out there, free agents that would be more favorable to sign after June 1 and all that,” Harbaugh said. “We’re going to be watching the waiver wire real close. We’re going to try and get better.
“We had a conversation, Ozzie and I [Thursday], and I like to think on principle that we really believe this: We want to build as strong of a 53-man roster as we possibly can, and as we do that [to] try to get stronger every chance we get. We’ll be looking.”
The Ravens have already addressed most of the concerns they had coming into the offseason.
They signed wide receiver Steve Smith. They signed tight end Owen Daniels. They traded for center Jeremy Zuttah. They brought in a free safety they feel like would be capable of starting if need be in former St. Louis Ram Darian Stewart. They also further added to their roster during the draft.
But Baltimore does still have some areas it would like to address.
Cornerback may be at the top of the list.
