In a sport that is surrounded by men who are strong both on and off the field, Baltimore Ravens senior advisor to player development O.J. Brigance is the strongest in the organization.
On Tuesday, Brigance was named the 2014 George Halas Award winner by the Professional Football Writers of America.
Each year the George Halas Award is given to a NFL player, coach, or staff member who overcomes the most adversity to succeed, something Brigance does on a daily basis.
“O.J. Brigance is the most influential person in our organization,” said Ravens head coach John Harbaugh in a press release.
“In a building of strong men, he is the strongest we have. You are energized each and every day to see how he attacks every day with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind, and we are blessed to have such an inspiring man with us every day.”
Brigance, the first ever Raven to win the Halas Award, was diagnosed with ALS in May of 2007 recently finished serving his 10th year in the Ravens front office.
Off the field, Brigance’s community work is second to none.
In 2008, Brigance and his wife Chandra created the Brigance Brigade Foundation. The mission of the Brigance Brigade Foundation is to engage, encourage and empower people living with ALS to live life through the provision of much needed equipment, resource guidance and support services as well as funding ALS research initiatives.
For O.J. to be named the George Halas Award winner truly shows the kind of man he is. Battling each and every day to overcome adversity not to help himself but in order to help others truly speaks volumes.
