How much does the fourth preseason game determine the fate of players on the roster bubble?
Apparently not much for second-year linebacker John Simon.
Simon, the Ravens fourth round selection in 2013, turned in his best performance of the preseason in the Ravens 22-17 victory over the Saints on Thursday night.
In the victory, Simon recorded two tackles and a sack to help the Ravens secure a perfect 4-0 record of preseason football.
Perhaps his performance was a case of too little too late for the Ravens decision makers regarding the former Ohio Stake Buckeye. Simon seemed basically non-existent for all of minicamp and the early portion of training camp this summer where he was negated to running reps with the third team defenses.
Even though the linebacking corp was a crowded unit, the cutting of Simon is still somewhat shocking at this point in time considering the aging Dumervil and Suggs along with McPhee’s contract being up soon leave little depth beyond 2014.
Not too long ago the Ravens had a player like Simon in Paul Kruger. One who struggled in pass coverage but certainly made up for it with his run defense and his ability to attack opposing quarterbacks.
The release of Simon marks the fourth Raven from the 2013 draft no longer with the team (Ryan Jensen, Aaron Mellette, Marc Anthony).
Yet Jah Reid still remains on the roster, anyone, anyone Bueller, Bueller!
