OWINGS MILLS — Some of the more interesting aspects of the Ravens’ 53-man roster that was announced Saturday:
– Seven wide receivers were kept.
Michael Campanaro, Kamar Aiken, and Deonte Thompson all made it. I thought Campanaro would make it for weeks, but I thought the Ravens would choose between Aiken and Thompson. Do the Ravens really need seven wide receivers, in an offense that will also feature two-tight end sets? If somebody wants to trade for Aiken or Thompson, the Ravens will certainly listen.
– The cornerback position remains fluid.
The Ravens cut both Dominique Franks and Derek Cox. It’s possible that either could be brought back. Lardarius Webb (back), Jimmy Smith (chest), and Asa Jackson (ankle) were all on the practice field Saturday, but Webb and Jackson had been absent from practice for weeks. Will they be ready for heavy reps Week 1 against the Bengals? Even with Chykie Brown still on the roster and Anthony Levine capable of playing both corner and safety, don’t be surprised if the Ravens make more moves at this spot.
