Arthur Brown is a perfect 7 for 7 this season in healthy scratches.
The highly touted linebacker is the only member of the team’s 53-man squad not to dress on game day in 2014. Meanwhile undrafted linebacker Zachary Orr has dressed in all 7 games when he’s contributed a total of one special teams tackle and 2 special teams penalties.
Yesterday Albert McClellan had 10 snaps on defense subbing for Daryl Smith when the game had already been decided.
Is former UDFA McClellan going to be the heir apparent to Daryl Smith?
Somehow I doubt it.
Is Orr going to be the second coming of Bennie Thompson?
Doubt it.
Shouldn’t Brown be the guy getting those snaps assigned to McClellan?
Absolutely!
Get Brown on the field.
STAT!
James Hurst is probably who the rest of the league thought he was (in my best Denny Green voice), hence the undrafted status. The fact that he is the backup for Eugene Monroe after two horrific games against the Colts and Falcons should also tell you what the Ravens coaching staff thinks of Jah Reid.
So why is Reid, a former third-round pick, even on the team if he can’t bump a very inconsistent UDFA?
Each year teams from one conference take on teams from a specific division in the other conference. For the Ravens that division in 2014 is the NFC South.
So far in 2014 the Ravens are 3-0 against the NFCS and they’ve won on average by the score of 38-11 and have outscored said opponents by the margin of 115-34. Next on the list is the New Orleans Saints on November 24 in the Super Dome.
In case you are wondering the Ravens will battle the NFC West in 2015 with home games slated for the Seahawks and Rams, road games against the 49ers and the Cardinals.
Steve Smith, Sr. is a perfect fit for the Ravens and when you think about it he’s a combo of Derrick Mason and Anquan Boldin with more speed. Smith was flagged yesterday with an unsportsmanlike penalty and while it’s easy to criticize such behavior it comes with the package that is Senior. For every such physical penalty there are a few positive physical plays like the his de-cleating of Falcons CB Robert Alford yesterday.
Pernell McPhee has been in beast mode in 2014. The versatile linebacker is a free agent after the season and the longer the Ravens wait the more likely they are to lose him to free agency. The team would like to have him back not only because of his productivity but also he is the next man up for Elvis Dumervil (30) and Terrell Suggs (32) who aren’t exactly spring chickens, relatively speaking of course.
Hopefully the Ravens haven’t forgotten that another unrestricted free agent who they hoped to retain but waited too long to do so, eventually chased the big money to Miami. Let’s hope McPhee isn’t the next Dannell Ellerbe.
The NFL’s trading deadline is on October 28th. Word is that the Tampa Bay Bucs will consider offers for WR Vincent Jackson. Jackson has scheduled salaries of $9.78M for 2015 and 2016 and his paycheck before taxes after every game in 2014 is $625,000. He would be a great fit in Baltimore but that’s a bit rich for the Ravens and would require a restructure since the Ravens are currently just $5.9M under the cap.
Mid-season trades aren’t common in the NFL but if you could grab a player from another team for draft compensation who might be affordable, unleash your inner Ozzie Newsome and tell us who that would be below…
