Butler Redeems Himself
Back in action for the first time since their preseason victory over the New Orleans Saints, the Ravens, in sweltering conditions took to the practice field today.
Donned in shorts and shells, the team started out in individual drills where they focused on some of the bumps in the road  that they endured on Thursday night after coaches spent the last two days watching film.
One player who had his share of bumps on Thursday night wasted no time turning things around on Saturday afternoon.
Wide receiver Jeremy Butler was back in form hauling in pass after pass from both Joe Flacco and Matt Schaub. Butler saw reps with both the first and second team offenses with Breshad Perriman and Marlon Brown again absent from practice.
Butler, on multiple occasions gave cornerback Rashaan Melvin fits, including twice beating him for touchdowns.
Mad Maxx Shines
Picking up where he left off against the Saints, rookie tight end Maxx Williams arguably turned in his best day of practice yet. While his impressive catch and run on Thursday may be hard to beat, the rookie made another fine play during 11 on 11 drills despite being tightly covered.
On 3rd &8 from the defense’s 25-yard line, quarterback Matt Schaub fired a bullet to Williams and the young tight end made a remarkable diving catch for the first down. After the catch, Williams drew a loud applause from even the Ravens defensive coaches for his effort.
Lawrence Guy Shines
After playing a team-high 51 snaps against the Saints Thursday night, defensive end Lawrence Guy continued his successful play throughout the afternoon. Guy saw most of his reps take place with the first team defense on Saturday and was dominant.
Guy, 6-4, 305 pounds showed he was again a force to be reckoned with defending the run. Guy was able to get into the Ravens offensive backfield numerous times including what would have been a bone-jarring hit on running back Buck Allen if they were in pads.
Guy added to his impressive day by batting two of Joe Flacco’s passes down at the line of scrimmage.
Other Observations
While no clear front runner emerged for the Ravens return specialist on Thursday, Michael Campanaro, Aldrick Robinson and DeAndre Carter all took reps for Jerry Rosburg. After struggling with his only return attempt, Carter fared well as did Camp and Robinson.
Defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan returned to practice after missing time with a foot injury. Jernigan took part during the individual drills part of practice but did not participate in full team drills.
Rookie Carl Davis saw a bump in reps with the first team defense after a standout night against the Saints. Davis took Jernigan’s reps and played well. With the team easing Jernigan back into practice, expect Davis’ to workload with the first team to remain heavy.
MIAÂ
Breshad Perriman, Kamar Aiken, Marlon Brown,  Darryl Baldwin, Asa Jackson (knee) and Steven Means did not practice. Robert Myers and John Urschel also remained sidelined with concussions.
Play of the Day Â
In what should have been an easy catch by wide receiver DeAndre Carter from Joe Flacco, the ball was tipped by Carter then bounced of linebacker Courtney Upshaw and into the hands of Daryl Smith. Smith then returned the interception for an easy touchdown.
Quote of the Day
“Even a broke clock is right two times a day.” Linebacker Terrell Suggs to undrafted wideout DeAndre Carter after Carter beat safety Will Hill for a touchdown during 11 on 11 drills.
