Holiday cheer spread throughout Howard High School on Friday evening as several members of the Baltimore Ravens wide receiver corps were on hand for a mission important to Michael Campanaro.
Campanaro, the Howard county native, hosted his annual food and toy drive to benefit the Marine Toys for Tots campaign.
“It’s good to show the younger people and represent the Ravens in the right way just giving back to the community,” said Camapanaro. “Being from this area and growing up is special to me, being my hometown to do this and give back to and giving back is just a great thing to do for those who truly need it.”
Joining Camp’s important initiative were teammates Breshad Perriman, the Ravens 2015 first-round draft pick, and newly acquired wideout Chris Givens.
“It’s a good thing to be here because once you get some blesses you can help bless others,” said the rookie. “I’m glad Mike gave me the opportunity to come out tonight and help the community.”
Fans were encouraged to bring unwrapped toys as well as pantry food items to donate and in return received autographs from the players and were able to take pictures with the receivers.
“This is a wonderful thing Michael does that helps so many that need it this time of year,” said Melvin Axelrod, a Ravens fan who has attended the event each year. “It’s not about what we get in return; it’s about pitching in and helping out an important cause that is often overlooked.”
Fans were lined up in droves, many with more than two or three items to donate. The players were amazed at the support that was given for Campanaro’s cause and happy to use their platforms to help spread the word of the importance of giving back to those in the community that need the help.
“It’s always been one of my dreams and one of my goals to give back. I’m finally at a place where I’m pretty much comfortable and it’s important for me to give what god blessed me with to others,” said Perriman before he greeted several fans who wished him the best in his recovery.
While Campanaro and Perriman battle through their own adversity in their football careers, they along with Chris Givens truly shined helping others battle through theirs.
Well done guys!
