The Ravens have claimed former Bears QB Jimmy Clausen off of waivers according to multiple sources. The Russell Street Report writers react to the news.

He is a former Marc Trestman system QB that was just let go by Trestman’s former team. It seems to make total sense. And who else do you expect the Ravens to pick up as a back-up QB? It’s a team that is not going anywhere, so they just need a body who can learn the system quickly… Clausen is that guy.

Jimmy Clausen seems like a logical choice for the Ravens given his connectivity to Offensive Coordinator Marc Trestman. I have a sneaking suspicion that he will see the field before the regular season is over. Depending upon how he does, it could be his audition for the backup roll next season, particularly if Trestman returns, which I fully expect.

Other than the Marc Trestman connection, there really isn’t too much of note here. Clausen is a washed up, below average quarterback, and the Ravens simply needed a roster filler to get through these final six games.

After a wretched preseason and training camp for Matt Schaub, I wouldn’t mind if Jimmy Clausen eventually took the field over him. While I liked the signing initially (this seems to be a trend for 2015), Schaub seemed far over the hill and unconcerned with the game in training camp. He needs good receivers and good protection in order to succeed. With three injured linemen, his top receiver gone, I don’t see that happening. Jimmy Clausen offers a more dynamic passing option at this point in their respective careers.

Everyone saw this coming; it made too much sense not to happen. The Ravens apparently don’t think they saw enough in Bryn Renner this preseason to have him serve as the full time backup. Can you imagine if Schaub goes down? Jimmy Clausen potentially handing off to Terrance West against the Steelers in Week 16 makes me sad already. This has truly been the strangest season in Ravens history.
