Word spread like wild fire when wide receiver Steve Smith Sr. announced his intentions of returning to the football for the Baltimore Ravens in 2016.
A healthy return will be an uphill battle for Smith Sr., who will be 37 in May, but if anyone can do it is surely the fiery wideout.
While fans are excited about his return to the field next season, his teammates are even happier.
Here’s a look at what some of them had to say upon hearing the announcement.
Elvis Dumervil: “It’s OK. That’s my guy! Obviously, I’m sure anybody who bleeds black and purple is excited. I’m excited for him to try to come back and get his body in tip-top shape like I know he will. [He is an] emotional [and] good leader, great teammate, great player. It’s great news.”
Kelechi Osemele: “I’m not surprised at all about that. He’s not the type of guy to go out like that. Obviously, we can’t wait to have him back. I know he’s going to come back in the best shape of his life, and he’s going to dominate, because that’s just the type of person he is.”
Jimmy Smith: “I kind of already knew he was coming back. (laughter) So, it’s great. It’s a great addition – not addition – but it’s great for him to come back. It’s a great, tremendous leader for us, and obviously, we know what type of player he is. That can only help us.”
Marshal Yanda: “Somebody asked me that before, and I started off by saying that Steve Smith is an outstanding player and an awesome teammate, and I love the guy. I was going to respect any decision that he made, because he doesn’t have anything to prove [with], obviously, how many games and snaps he has played. I would respect his decision no matter what. We’re very happy to hear he’s going to come back, because if you’re in a war, there’s no better guy that you want on your sideline with you in that war than Steve. I’m fired up about it, but like I said, I respected whatever he was going to do. If he was going to retire, I was going to be happy. If he was going to play for us, I was going to be happy, because he has earned that respect over the years playing in this league.”
