The Ravens Will Have to Wait For Secondhand “Toys”
For some fans, today is like Christmas morning in the NFL. Press play for more or read the transcript below.
When the clock strikes 4 today, big free agent signings will be officially announced. Unfortunately Ravens fans will feel like stepchildren and forced to pretend to be excited about Ozzie Newsome signing a 35-year old tight end in the form of Ben Watson.
To put that in perspective, Watson was drafted 18 picks before the Ravens handed in the card for their first pick in 2004, Dwan Edwards.
We’ve seen in the past how teams like the Redskins, Eagles and Dolphins win in March with flashy free agent signings. Of course none of these teams has won a Super Bowl in the last 24 seasons, so there’s that.
Yet it would be nice to see the Ravens make a splash signing that could make a difference, like the Patriots once did with Randy Moss or the Broncos with signings like Aquib Talib, Emmanuel Sanders or DeMarcus Ware.
Pass rushers have become available and so have a few corners – both screamingly obvious needs of the Ravens that could make a difference. But they don’t have the juju to play in those high stakes games. They have a Capital Grille appetite with a Golden Corral budget.
Maybe one day the Ravens can occupy a seat at the free agent dinner table if they can clean up the cap mess that has plagued them for years. But for now, they’ll have to settle for secondhand toys.
That’s what it’s like for Ravens fans on Christmas morning in the NFL.
