Ravens Sign Ben Watson

When the words “The Ravens Sign Ben Watson” hit social media, most fans greeted the news with sighs or yawns but make no mistake about it, the Watson signing makes sense! Press play for more or read the transcript that follows…

It’s hard to get excited about the Ravens signing of 35-year old tight end Ben Watson to a 2-year deal that could be worth up to $7M, particularly when one of the team’s best players is heading to Oakland – namely Kelechi Osemele.

But while the move won’t sell tickets it is a solid one.

The signing of Watson affords the Ravens leadership at the tight end position, and another top-notch locker room guy. Some might argue that the Ravens already have leaders in the locker room, and while that may be true, Watson’s experience at the position makes a difference.

The Ravens have 3 young tight ends. Watson’s knowledge could prove to be invaluable to the development of these promising talents. Let’s not forget how much Dennis Pitta credited Todd Heap for his development between his rookie and sophomore seasons.

And for all intents and purposes, the deal is really written like a one-year deal, one that the Ravens can easily unwind in 2017 and save $3M.

Some in the Twitterverse are wondering why the Ravens didn’t make a play for Ladarius Green, formerly of the Chargers who appears to be headed to Pittsburgh. Different play altogether. Green is 25 years old. Do the Ravens really need another developing tight end with 3 already on the roster? C’mon man!

You don’t have to be Sherlock Holmes to understand that Watson works.
