Everything changed for Ronnie Stanley as he picked up the Ravens’ phone call on Thursday night.
The standout Notre Dame offensive tackle knew Baltimore was targeting him. But he didn’t know whether he was the Ravens’ best player remaining.
“I had a great relationship with the coaches and [general manager Ozzie Newsome], and yes, I knew I was definitely a target on their board,” remarked Stanley during his post draft press conference. “But the draft is crazy, and you never know how things are going to pan out.”
Crazy things can happen in the draft. Just ask fellow offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil.
Some will argue that Tunsil is the better prospect. That doesn’t matter to the 6-6 gentle giant Stanley. He didn’t allow more than two quarterback pressures in a game last season. He knows that he’s a high caliber player himself.
“As a competitor, I’m always going to see myself as the best,” said Stanley. “I don’t think you’ll ever see me saying something different, but that is me.
“I respect Laremy [Tunsil], because he’s a great player as well. Whatever team gets him is getting a great player.”
For Stanley, going to the Ravens brought an incredible feeling of joy.
“It gives me a lot of confidence, especially going to a franchise like the Ravens – one with a good track record. They know how to win games and it’s just a great organization to be a part of, and especially to grow into.”
Stanley is ready to contribute day one. The organization could use it. With the status of Eugene Monroe in question, Baltimore needed a player to fill in at left tackle. Stanley fits the bill. His experience in a pro-style offense in college will help him become ready sooner.
“Yes, 100 percent,” responded Stanley when asked whether his experience in college will translate to the NFL. “Going to Notre Dame has definitely given me a little jumpstart on what to expect in the real world, and they really prepare you mentally and physically.”
Monroe’s status forced the Ravens’ hand a bit, but the Ravens are excited to have him. He was highly coveted around the league.
Stanley is just as pumped up about joining a first class football team.
“I’m just very excited and happy, and I’m just very appreciative and humbled to be on such a good organization.”
Stanley met Joe Flacco for the first time today. His first impression? “I didn’t know he was so tall.”
When asked about how he feels protecting the recovering quarterback, Stanley said, “I’m honored to have the opportunity to block for him.”
Considering what happened to Flacco’s knee because of poor protection on his blind side, surely he feels the same.
