The Ravens had their second day of mandatory minicamp today. In perfect Maryland style, the weather was a bit of everything. We had 10 seconds of drizzles, 10 seconds of sun, the breeze picked up and then the clouds came back. The practice was kind of like the weather. We got a bit of everything.
The end of the practice was the most notable as the offense battled with the defense. Before that, I got a glimpse at some drills with the receivers as much of the team was working on special teams drills. Tarik Black, a young receiver looking for a spot with the team made an impression on me. He’s a big 6-3 target and was putting in a good effort in practice. He scored two touchdowns against the defense. He’s on my radar now. He was an undrafted free agent for the Indianapolis Colts in 2021. He was with the Jets last year, mostly on the practice squad.
There were some nice plays made by the defense, but the offense provide a few highlights to rave about. Let’s first talk about the defense for a bit…
There were some tipped passes near the line of scrimmage. Odafe Oweh had one of them. Marlon Humphrey had a nice interception when Nelson Agholor bobbled a pass and presented him with a gift-wrapped opportunity (Agholor did have a touchdown, and this was his one negative play during a solid practice). The other notable interception came from Keyvon Seymour off a forced throw by Tyler Huntley.
David Ojabo looks the part. He was very quick off the edge. He has a chance to be a very intimidating addition to the defense this season. His 6-4 frame and his burst are very noticeable. This is the player to watch moving forward. I repeat: He looks the part. I can’t wait to see him when they don the pads and things get a lot more serious in training camp and the preseason, when jobs are on the line.
Lamar Jackson led a nice touchdown drive and he capped it off with a touchdown to Isaiah Likely. Jackson looked sharp passing the football. There were some fantastic catches today. Andy Isabella was impressive during the session. He had a contested catch against Ar’Darius Washington. Josh Johnson missed him on a deep shot where he split the safeties. That could have been a well executed play and design given a better-placed ball. Ben Mason even got into the action with a nice grab over the head of a linebacker in hot pursuit.
Overall it was a nice outing during day 2 of this mandatory minicamp at the Under Armour Performance Center. The energy was very upbeat from a team that promises to be a contender. It was a pleasure to take this one in.
