UPDATE: Impact of Webb’s New Deal

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Ravens have agreed to a restructure (perhaps pay cut) with CB Lardarius Webb. How exactly it impacts the Ravens cap picture remains to be seen as we await details of the new structure.

Until then here’s a sneak peak (as Tweeted by Brian McFarland) at the potential impact the new deal has on the team’s cap. ~ Tony Lombardi

LTBE = likely to be earned

NLTBE = not likely to be earned

NOTES:  Based on Aaron Wilson’s report that “Webb is due to make roughly $18M over the next 3 year if 62% playing time are reached” and Webb is “due to make $6M in 2016 and 2017” if he reaches those thresholds, Webb’s 2016 and 2017 Cap numbers will initially be less than if he was set to make $6M in salary.  Once his base salaries for 2016 and 2017 are disclosed, those Cap numbers can be determined.

  1. glad webb hooked us up like that and was honestly a lil bummed to see some writers bashing webb for not taking a paycut but i was really glad to hear he came around to stay here and help the team. always liked webb and defended him when he wasnt playing well. Glad to see that hes sticking around

  2. Webby is a good dude, and when he is healthy, a solid corner.  I’m glad that both sides found a way to keep him here.  I think it’s a mistake when fans praise or criticize a player based upon whether the player is willing to take a pay cut “to help the team”.

I guess that there are some players like Manning and Brady who might do so because (a) they already have tens of millions and (b) they can see that their contract is preventing the team from being competitive.  However, for most players (like Webb), it comes down to a business decision.  Webb could have stuck to his guns and made the Ravens honor his salary for this year, but he had to calculate the odds that the team would either cut him or trade him like they did to Ngata.

If they cut him, given his injury history, he’s got limited team choices and he still might not be able to make his scheduled salary next year.  If they trade him, he gets paid, but maybe while playing before 30,000 empty seats in a soul-sucking place like Jacksonville.  I would guess that Webb weighed all of the options and decided that taking a pay cut was the best move for him.  I think he was probably right.

  3. wow 4 to 4 and half million in addition what they still have which I think Brian reported was 7.8 though we still dont know what the deal is with K. Lewis. Ozzie can we plaease now go after one of Bowe, Crabtree, or Jenning pretty please. TE not much we can do about that now..Maybe a Maxx Williams in the first even if it means dropping down a few spots and getting even more pick or picks and then picking a speedster like Devin Smith in the 2nd. If this would take place the Ravens would be in control of the draft. With all the picks they would have at their disposal to move up and down in the draft.
