Conditions were awesome for this morning’s rookie practice session that was dominated by the defense when full-team scrimmaging was in play. I thought to focus on all of the draft picks and a few of the key UDFA’s. I’ll have a more comprehensive report later today but thought to share some observations that I posted on Twitter earlier.
I’ll be working on my #Ravens rookie camp notes shortly but thought I’d throw out a few observations here to start…Bateman is a smooth route runner and stands out among the receivers in camp with suddenness, cuts, effortless acceleration…fights off press coverage effectively. pic.twitter.com/ZRYLytUOcc

Odafe Oweh looks like a small forward. Extremely athletic and does anchor at the point of attack v. run. Didn’t really see much in the way of pressure on the QB. pic.twitter.com/SxVamYYMul

Ben Cleveland has a thunderous punch and he maintains a strong lower base with smooth footwork. (all images c/o @Ravens) pic.twitter.com/AjdoVRTA6V

Brandon Stephens spent most of the practice on the outside often matched up against Bateman. His backpedal has been criticized but I didn’t notice any struggles today, mirroring the WR’s well. I don’t recall a signal pass being completed on him in full scrimmaging or 7-on-7. pic.twitter.com/65wDcuCo2t

Tylan Wallace accelerates well out of his breaks. Another effortless route runner with reliable hands who creates separation with top end change of directions skills. Can’t say I noticed a second gear but he didn’t have opportunities to show that during scrimmaging or 7 on 7. pic.twitter.com/4LdDcCfvWM

Shaun Wade looks longer than I expected and competed well against Wallace and at times v. Bateman. Late during the session he had a terrific diving PD that inspired praises from the defensive coaches. pic.twitter.com/tX09SaEBWN

Daelin Hayes was active, sturdy at the point of attack and really dialed into the instruction from the coaching staff. pic.twitter.com/M9vz8u7zvB

Ben Mason and Jake Breeland did not participate in today’s practice.

Have to give props to camp QB Kenji Bahar, a Calvert Hall grad who played collegiately at Monmouth. He wasn’t perfect but he earned his paycheck today as the only signal caller. Give that man an icepack for that right shoulder! Reminder all images c/o @Ravens pic.twitter.com/BcdUbk0kjm

Ar’Darius Washington has a nose for the ball. He’s quick and anticipates well and that seems to mitigate his lack of size and foot speed, at least for today. His backpedal is very solid, COD skills are sharp. He nearly had a pick during 7-on-7’s.

There were a few tryout players in attendance today, one of which was Blake Gallagher, an ILB from Northwestern. A bit undersized & not a smooth athlete, he’s a communicator and relentless. High effort player who seems to anticipate well, which helps overcome a limited skillset. pic.twitter.com/8K6uBpumAm
