Oweh is Stacking
There was a sense of relief around training camp on Saturday as receiver Devin Duvernay returned to practice, but there were some young receivers who stood out on a slow-paced session that had the feel of a let’s-get-some-work-done-but-end-this-heat-drenched-weekend-kind-of-day.
Second-year receiver Jaylon Moore continued his solid camp with another steady performance, and was on the receiving end of the “play of the day” when he hauled in a deep pass from Lamar Jackson with tight coverage from rookie corner Denzel Williams. Don’t be surprised if Moore earns real consideration to make this team. Tylan Wallace, a second-year receiver with a tighter grip on a roster spot, had one of his better days of camp, hauling in a few passes on the day, including a bullet from Jackson in between defenders.
Bailey Gaither just missed hauling in a deep pass over Kevon Seymour, who had great coverage. He later had a nice catch-and-run from Jackson. Raleigh Webb brought in two touchdowns in red zone drills, and had another nice catch on a low pass from Anthony Brown. And Binjimen Victor also gathered in a nice ball along the sideline by using his height to snatch it away from a defender. Makai Polk registered a touchdown on a pass from Jackson while matched up against Jalyn Armour-Davis, and Slade Bolden had a diving catch for a touchdown in red-zone drills.
As for the established guys, Rashod Bateman sat out practice, James Proche had a solid day, bringing in a deep pass from Jackson in drills, and Duvernay got back in the max, snaring in another long one from Jackson in the same drill. Mark Andrews was typical, beast-mode Andrews, and gave a little scare with awkward slide, and didn’t return to practice, but he appeared fine on the sideline (to a person who has no medical expertise in the least, mind you). Isaiah Likely didn’t make his customary splash plays, but he still looked good when targeted.
As for things that weren’t pass-catchers:
- Let’s start with Jackson. He wasn’t particularly sharp, but he wasn’t bad, either. He hit some nice throws, but missed a few others he has been largely hitting in camp. There were also two plays that looked like miscommunication between thrower and catcher. I’d say the good throws were very, very good, and the rest fell into fine-to-off status.
- Odafe Oweh flashes every practice with his explosiveness — he flashed a lot today. It’s not just his roadrunner-like speed, either, as Oweh is getting into the backfield with a variety of moves, as well. He showed great bend on one red-zone rep, getting to Tyler Huntley immediately as he dropped back. In one six-play stretch in that drill, I counted Oweh blowing up the play three times.
- Also in that drill, Aaron Crawford showed great penetration to stop Corey Clement for no gain. Isaiah Mack, Broderick Washington and Justin Madubuike also made their presence known during the day. Travis Jones batted down a pass at the line, and got penetration a few snaps.
- Justin Houston appeared to be disruptive again in the pass-rush game. The veteran is having a nice camp so far.
- The practice began with a lengthy punt-team series of drills, and rookie punter Jordan Stout showed off his leg, and displaying a variety of kicks he has “in his bag.” Stout booted some high punts toward the sideline, and some low directional kicks. It has to be a benefit to Stout to have Sam Koch helping out his game, as Koch was notorious for the different punts he had at his disposal. It seems to be a good pairing.
- The Ravens spent a good chunk of the early part of practice going through run-game reps, and plenty of plays with mesh-point reps in option plays. Mike Davis had one nice run when he juked a linebacker in the backfield.
- Kyle Fuller did a nice job breaking up a pass to Tylan Wallace, and had another rep with James Proche where the two got tangled up and a pass was incomplete.
- Steven Means appeared injured on one play, and was receiving treatment. The Ravens are already thin at outside linebacker, and this would not help that situation if it turns out to be significant.
- Ben Cleveland and Daniel Faalele stood next to each other at one point and… well, they were big.
