On Ravens Twitter

You know how I know in my soul that you have a miserable existence? You use the time you have to try to steal the joy from someone else. It’s honestly that obvious.

Just take a look at Ravens Twitter. Again — it’s really easy to see.

Lacie DeCosta, the wife of Ravens General Manager Eric DeCosta, is one of those positive people who tries to spread a little joy every day when she ventures out into the dark shadows of Twitter. She says good morning. She talks about the players who are her personal favorites. She took the time to get to know a young woman who was active in Ravens Twitter before she tragically passed away. She comes off as good people.

But like clockwork, and as an example of our general loss of decorum and class in today’s world, there are always a few people who are so frustrated with their own personal lack of worth and self-esteem, that they feel obligated to try to steal her joy. It’s like the Grinch — except the Grinch had the courage to do his nastiness in person and not while hiding behind a keyboard where he suffers a life that obviously contains no happiness.

Let’s separate a few things here if you’re a little slow. Eric DeCosta is the general manager. He makes decisions that impact the team that all of us love, and his actions are out there for us to judge and converse over throughout social media. You can say you wish he would have done more to bolster the left tackle position last season. You can question his strategy for building a receiver room in 2022. You can suggest any number of things that are related to his job duties, and you can even openly opine that he should be fired and sent packing if you don’t like how he does his job.

And I’m not here to defend DeCosta. Do I like him? Yeah, he seems like a good guy, and he worked for the organization for a number of years to get where he is today. Do I hope he does a good job? Absolutely. The Ravens are my team. I want him to build a champion. But I do question some of his moves when I find something to question, and I do it with my name attached to my articles and my Twitter posts.

So, yeah, I’m not here to defend Eric DeCosta. He’s a big boy, and he gets to sit in the big chair at The Castle. But I am here to defend basic human decency and to point out that attacking the wife of somebody because you don’t agree with decisions her spouse makes at his place of business is low-brow, cowardly and, frankly, disgusting.

If you find yourself doing this to strangers who have the audacity to wish you a good morning and talk about what jersey she should wear to support our team, seek help. Take a look around you and try to figure out when everything went horribly wrong around you.

It’s weak.

  1. Unfortunately, we live in a very divIsive time when ad hominem attacks have become the norm! One can and should be able to agree without being……disagreeable! Also, what many people don’t understand is that their expressions are usually just…..opinions!

  2. The longer we live, the clearer it becomes that a lot of folks are just miserable turds. The internet has allowed this sort to progress from just grumbling to themselves in the basement of their mom’s house to acting like a Big Man while hiding behind a cloak of anonymity.

  3. Darin, Thanks for writing this piece. Its good to point out the low life comments from someone that is supposedly a Raven fan. I hope others follow suit. EDC is no mental midget and his wife certainly doesn’t deserve personal comments based on football issues. Its why so many people hide their actual opinions. Make a comment and you might stir up some unbalanced fool. Hey Nick, learn how to speak like a civil being or stay in the basement with the X box.

  4. wasn’t he executive of the year 2 years ago . it is just insane how quick people are to judge and let a game run their lives .injuries have run the ravens for qiute a while now there is only so much you can do but most of all people need to get a life and realize the ravens have a great organization

  5. Darin – TY for the article. I don’t have a Twitter account. While I’m sure some people live their life on that platform – it’s just one of those things that never interested me. I’m sad for Mrs. DeCosta (and on behalf of myself and the other Ravens fans I know, we’d like to apologize) that she was subjected to this. And, I’m a different kind of sad for the person who wrote such an ignorant tweet. Negative comments about players, coaches, owners, stadium beer prices, etc., come as natural part of the being-a-fan package. After the Dolphin’s game for example- I posted on this site that the Ravens needed to fire John, Greg, the new Harbaugh family friend from Michigan they brought in as DC. However, personal attacks sent to the spouse of a player, coach, owner, etc., very sad and, as noted, cowardly. “Nick” needs to apologize and grow up.
