Niners, DraftKings…You Got Me!

So last night, after watching two episodes of The White Lotus with my wife, I turned on the Thursday Night Football game featuring the San Francisco 49ers at the Seattle Seahawks. Probably like many of you, I didn’t have a rooting interest in the game until I turned to my trusty DraftKings app to make a small wager ($20). The bet placed was an in-game play after the Niners took a 7-0 lead.

The early flow of the game suggested that this one could be and easy “Dub” for San Francisco so I decided that with a 7-point lead, I’d take the Niners and lay the 8 ½. For a while the bet looked good. Then for a minute, the bet looked like a lock. The Seahawks trailed 21-3 at the 12:52 mark of the 3rd quarter and faced a 3rd-and-8 from their own 27. Geno Smith was picked off by Deommodore Lenoir who returned it 37 yards for a would-be touchdown.

Suddenly, the bet REALLY looked good.

But wait…there’s a flag on the field.

Nick Bosa was called for roughing the passer, nullifying the score.

Roughing the passer? THAT is roughing the passer?

How soon before the league just puts skirts and flags on the quarterbacks?

Eventually the Seahawks pulled to within 8 at 21-13. The Niners had the ball and looked to grind out the clock and get out of Emerald City with a win. And then, it almost happened. Rookie running back Jordan Mason ripped off a big run from the Niners 43. GO JORDAN! GO JORDAN!

HE. COULD. GO. ALL. THE. WAY.

He didn’t go all the way.

So I thought, “I wonder if the Niners will still try to score. Surely somewhere out there is a tie-breaker tied to point differential, quality of win or loss, or ability to score against the team sporting the league’s ugliest uniforms known to mankind. That could help San Francisco in the postseason seedings, right?”

Wrong!

The Niners took a knee, killed the clock and won by 8 while I lost by a ½ point.

But it did add a little fun to the game. Wager responsibly.

Oh, and I don’t get all the hoopla over The White Lotus. You’d be better off watching reruns of The Brady Bunch or Tom Brady pressers.

Speaking of Tom, is it me or does he not look well. Not how he’s looked on the field – how he looks behind the podium.

There are rumors that Brady plans to play again in 2023. Sheesh. Some team is going to be Brady’s San Diego Chargers to 40-year-old John Unitas, aren’t they? By the way, just to show you how times have changed, Unitas is universally regarded as one of the game’s all-time greats but did you know that his career completion percentage is 54.6% and that his best completion percentage season was 58.5 in 1967?

Shameful Tweet

Todd McShay took time off from ESPN for health reasons. He’s courageously battling through his setback on a national stage for all to see. That takes guts. This tweet on the other hand, is exactly what is wrong with the oftentimes toxic app called Twitter.

On the flip side of decency and in the Spirit of the Season, if you haven’t seen this commercial, it is so worth the next 140 seconds of your life. I promise!

Make a difference in someone’s day today.

Have an amazing weekend everyone.

  1. Tony, don’t give up your day job! Also, relative to roughing the passer, the league is considering more draconian rules as we speak! Slowly, but surely, they are killing the great game of football! As a philosopher once observed, “Whom the gods would destroy, they first make drunk with……power”!
