Minicamp Notes: Half Speed

The Baltimore Ravens had a practice that can be described in two words: half speed. Much of Thursday’s mandatory minicamp session seemed like a walk-through of things on offense, of which I really can’t get into specifics. The team focused on football inside the 20-yard line and there were some notable plays as the offense worked inside the red zone and took shots to the end zone.

It was the last day of mini-camp and you could tell.

  • Nelson Agholor looks good when he catches the football. Keyword there is when. His hands are more suspect than you’d like to see, but he’s a quick target who seems to fit in well.
  • Kyle Hamilton had a nice interception jumping a route in the end zone. Kyu Blu Kelly had a pick as well.
  • No Odell Beckham Jr. at practice today, but it doesn’t sound like there’s anything to worry about there.
  • Michael Pierce tipped a pass today. Tipped passes have been common. In the post-practice meeting with the media, John Harbaugh mentioned that part of that is because the offensive linemen don’t have pads on and can’t do as much to combat it.
  • The beginning of the practice saw the Ravens do positional work. Linemen fired out of their stance, hit a pad, and shuffled their feet. Tight ends worked on concentration through the catch with their teammates blocking the vision of the ball in the air. Receivers worked on their release off the line of scrimmage. The basics.

We’ll see the Ravens again when they return to Owings Mills for training camp. The mini-camp offered some interesting glimpses of things. We know what to watch going into August and that’s worth being excited about. It was a calm, light practice today. The team worked on some things to get them more ready to roll when training camp comes along.

When they return it will be a lot hotter and there will be much more at stake. I, for one, can’t wait!

  1. Nice to hear the team was practicing red zone play. I am glad we have Todd at OC. It’s just my opinion but I think he brings vast experience and is flexible and knowledgeable. So unlike the past few years we have better personnel, better coaching, more flexibility. We practice for different situations so that we will be more balanced. We will be able to play different styles and schemes so we will be more unpredictable and dangerous this season.

I also must say Harbs did a very good job in bringing in Mac and our defense should be even better this season will Mac and crew having a year under their belt. As much as I may have questioned some of Harbs decisions in the past, I have to give him kudos for the choices and decisions he has made recently. Hopefully this will be a very good season. Wtg Harbs.
