OTL: Ravens WR Depth to Be Tested Early

The Baltimore Ravens’ passing attack was firing on all cylinders during Sunday’s season opener against the Indianapolis Colts.

Two-time MVP quarterback Lamar Jackson amassed 324 passing yards and a passing touchdown on a 68.0% completion percentage, while Pro-Bowl wide receiver Zay Flowers erupted for a career-best 150 receiving yards as Baltimore routed the Colts 41-23.

Jackson totaled his most passing yards in a game since Oct. 6, 2024, and Flowers achieved a career high in receiving yards in just one half against Indianapolis. It was a record-setting day for Baltimore’s new-look offense.

But by the end of the afternoon, the Ravens’ wide receiver room had sustained several crucial blows.

Flowers, one of three wide receivers in franchise history to record multiple 1,000-yard seasons for the team, suffered a hamstring injury in the second quarter, knocking him out for the remainder of the game. Shortly after, rookie sensation Ja’Kobi Lane was ruled out after suffering a wrist injury in the first half of his NFL debut.

After being selected with the 80th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft and managing a strong training camp performance, Lane entered his first NFL season with heaps of promise. The 22-year-old actually seemingly caught the first touchdown of his young career in the second quarter–followed by a remarkable iteration of Ray Lewis’ iconic “Squirrel dance” celebration–before a holding penalty on center Jovaughn Gwyn nullified the play. The USC alum’s debut season, however, will now have to be put on hold.

The initial diagnosis for Lane is a fractured wrist, per NFL Network’s Mike Garofolo–an injury that would likely require a stint on Baltimore’s injured reserve.

The typical recovery time for a fractured wrist is 6-12 weeks, meaning Ravens Flock may not see the promising third-round wideout until November or December. However, the time frame is heavily dependent on the severity of the fracture and whether or not tendon/ligament damage is involved. We will hope for the best, and expect to learn more soon.

Meanwhile, Flowers’ hamstring tweak is fortunately much less severe.

The 26-year-old is considered “day-to-day” with an injury that is “not considered serious” ahead of Monday’s testing, sources told NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport this morning.

Both pass catchers are set to undergo an MRI on Monday to determine the full severity of their injuries, but you can expect to see Flowers back much sooner than his rookie teammate.

With Lane sidelined for an extended period of time, Baltimore’s wide receiver depth will face an early test. The team possesses a depth chart of Rashod Bateman, Devontez Walker and Elijah Sarratt behind its superstar Flowers.

Bateman, one of Baltimore’s two first-round picks back in 2021, received just one target during Sunday’s contest in Indianapolis (though he had a catch negated by penalty). The 26-year-old is desperately looking to rebound after an underwhelming 2025 season with a career-low 224 receiving yards. The absence of Lane may give Bateman the perfect opportunity to reestablish himself in the team’s passing game.

The former Minnesota Golden Gopher is joined by Walker, who missed the Ravens’ season opener after being limited in practice all week with a groin injury. The 25-year-old speedster logged 136 yards and three touchdowns on six receptions a season ago and posted a team-leading 85 receiving yards in this year’s preseason.

Baltimore’s wide receiver room is also fixed with another rookie target in Sarratt. A fourth-round pick out of Indiana, Sarratt missed Week 1 as a healthy scratch, but the current circumstances are setting him up for a much more significant role. The 23-year-old hauled in eight catches for 70 yards in the preseason after recording 824 yards and 15 touchdowns as a senior with the Hoosiers.

The team’s wideout corps is rounded out by returners Chris Moore and LaJohntay Wester. While the two typically will not contribute offensively, the need for depth could sprinkle some opportunities, as was the case on Sunday.

Moore, called up from Baltimore’s practice squad ahead of game time, snagged an electrifying 53-yard pass from Jackson in the game’s final quarter, which could have very well secured himself a spot on the active roster should Lane be moved to injured reserve. With the catch and his solid work in the return game, Moore earned himself a game ball. Wester caught both of his targets on Sunday, logging the first 15 receiving yards of his NFL career after being used solely as a returner during his rookie campaign.

The team will continue to monitor Flowers’ status ahead of their Week 2 home-opener against the New Orleans Saints, but they are already being forced to pivot toward their depth after just one game.

For a Ravens offense that generated a whopping 506 total yards in their first showing of the year, the challenge now becomes maintaining momentum while navigating early-season injuries.

  1. Why didn’t Zay get a game ball? Our center got on for two holding calls and a touchdown called back. BTW, doesn’t DEC deserve one also. The Looper gets honorable mention.
